Do patches still make sense?
Today, most organizations prefer direct embroidery on apparel. With current equipment and techniques, we can embroidery on almost any cloth item — so does it still make sense to create patches? In general, the answer is no. Most customers prefer the look and simplicity of direct embroidery and the additional cost of the garment is often less than the cost of a custom patch.
However, there are cases in which you should consider a custom patch instead of direct embroidery:
- The garment will outlast the insignia or emblem. This is common when rank or position will change on a uniform.
- The garment is not known or placement is flexible. This is common with souvenirs patches and items directed at patch collectors.
